How Football Transfer Windows Work

Clubs cannot sign players whenever they like. Transfers are restricted to defined windows, and understanding the rules explains a lot of the summer drama.
The two windows
Most leagues open a longer window between seasons and a shorter one mid-season. A move must be registered before the window shuts, which is why deadline day produces so many last-minute deals — agents and clubs push negotiations to the final hours to gain leverage.
More than a transfer fee
A deal involves the fee between clubs, personal terms with the player, a medical, and often clauses: sell-on percentages, appearance bonuses or buy-back options. Loans let a club move a player temporarily, sometimes with an obligation to buy later. When any one piece stalls, an "agreed" transfer can still collapse — which is why nothing is official until the paperwork is filed.
