How to Read a League Table Beyond the Points

A league table looks simple — most points win — but the columns beside the points often decide titles and relegation.
Goal difference is the tiebreaker that matters
When teams finish level on points, goal difference usually separates them, so a heavy win late in the season can be worth more than it first appears. It also hints at underlying quality: a team with a strong goal difference but fewer points may have been unlucky.
Games in hand and form
Two teams on the same points are not always level — one may have played fewer matches, giving it a chance to pull ahead. Recent form matters too: a side climbing on a winning run is in a very different position from one clinging to points earned months ago. Reading these together turns a static table into a forecast.
