AI on the Edge: What On-Device Models Mean for You

The biggest change in consumer AI this year is not a smarter chatbot — it is where the model runs.
From the cloud to your pocket
For years, AI features sent your data to a remote server and waited for an answer. On-device models flip that: the model lives on your phone or laptop, so requests never leave the device.
- Privacy — personal data stays local.
- Speed — no round trip to a server.
- Cost — no per-request cloud bill.
The trade-off
Local models are smaller, so they still trail the largest cloud systems on the hardest tasks. But for summarising, transcribing and search, they are now good enough — and increasingly expected.
The question is no longer can it run locally, but should it.
Expect more apps to default to on-device, falling back to the cloud only when a task genuinely needs it.
