Open-Source Model Rivals Frontier Labs on Benchmarks

A research group released a new open-source model this week that matches leading closed systems on several public benchmarks, narrowing a gap that many assumed would only widen.
Crucially, the team published the model's weights under a permissive licence, allowing companies to run and adapt it on their own hardware. For organisations wary of sending data to third-party APIs, that flexibility may matter as much as raw capability.
Researchers cautioned that benchmark scores do not capture everything, and that closed labs retain advantages in scale and tooling. Still, the release is likely to intensify competition and push prices down across the board.
