Monsoon Arrives Early Across the Coastal Belt, Easing Heatwave
The monsoon swept onto the coastal belt several days ahead of schedule this week, bringing the first sustained rain after a punishing heatwave that had pushed daytime temperatures to record highs. Residents welcomed the cooler air, and reservoirs that had fallen to worrying levels began to recover.
The weather service said conditions were favourable for the system to advance inland over the coming fortnight, with above-average rainfall likely through July. Farmers, who time planting to the rains, called the early onset a relief after a dry pre-season.
Authorities urged caution all the same, reminding low-lying districts to clear drains and prepare for the flash flooding that often accompanies the season's first heavy downpours.
